How To Set Up Linux - Ubuntu 19.10 For Gaming - DXVK / WINE / Esync / Proton / Gamemode / Lutris

An easy to follow tutorial that will show you how to set up Ubuntu 19.10 for gaming, explaining how to install DXVK, WINE, Steam Proton, Esync, Gamemode, and Wine/Proton Tricks.

Although this tutorial will focus on Ubuntu 19.10, the steps will also work for Kubuntu, Linux Mint, PopOS and any other distribution that is based on Ubuntu.

This tutorial assumes that you have flashed Ubuntu 19.10 ISO to a bootable USB drive and have set up your computer to boot from that USB drive.

Step 1 – Install Ubuntu 19.10

Follow the installation process and choose your preferences.

I recommend choosing the following:

Normal installation

Download updates while installing Ubuntu

Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats

Erase disk and install Ubuntu

Step 2 – Update Ubuntu 19.10

To ensure all the latest updates and packages for your installation is installed, open up a terminal and type in the below:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Step 3 – Install the latest version of your graphic driver.

https://github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki/Installing-drivers

If you have a nVidia GPU, type the below into the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

sudo apt update

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-430 libnvidia-gl-430 libnvidia-gl-430:i386

sudo apt install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386

Then reboot the system.

sudo reboot

Alternatively if you have either an Intel or AMD GPU, type the below into a terminal instead.

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386

sudo apt install mesa-vulkan-drivers mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386

Then reboot the system.

sudo reboot

Step 4 – Check Esync is enabled.

https://github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki/How-to:-Esync

Open up a terminal and type in the following:

ulimit -Hn

As long as you have a value equal or greater to 524288, then eSync is enabled.

Step 5 – Install WINE and dependencies

https://github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki/Wine-Dependencies

Open up a terminal and type in the following:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key

sudo apt-key add winehq.key

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ eoan main’

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends wine-stable

sudo apt-get install libgnutls30:i386 libldap-2.4-2:i386 libgpg-error0:i386 libxml2:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libsqlite3-0:i386

Step 6 – Install Feral Gamemode

https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode

sudo apt install python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-venv

python3 -m pip install --user pipx

~/.local/bin/pipx ensurepath

Close the terminal window and open up a new one, and type in the below:

pipx install protontricks

Step 9 – Install Lutris

Open up a terminal and type in the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lutris-team/lutris

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install lutris

Step 10 – Performance tweaks for Lutris

FOR NVIDIA

Add the below entries to System preferences / System Options / Environmental variables.

Key - __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE

Value – 1

Key - __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH

Value - /home/ryan/Games/origin/nv-shaders

FOR AMD

Key – mesa_glthread

Value – True

Then click save.

Step 11 - Enable Gamemode to work with all Lutris games.

Open up Lutris and go to System preferences / System Options / Environmental variables.

Click Add and enter in the below.

Key - LD_PRELOAD

Value – /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgamemodeauto.so.0

Step 12 – Install Steam

Open up a terminal and type in the following:

sudo apt-get install steam

Step 13 – Run Gamemode with Steam Proton games.

Add the following to the game launcher options:

gamemoderun %command%

Step 14 - To enable game mode for all Proton enabled games.

Navigate to .steam / steam / steamapps / command / Proton 4.11 / user_settings.sample.py

Open the file (do not execute) and add the following between user_settings = { and }

import os
user_settings = {
"LD_PRELOAD": "/usr/$LIB/libgamemodeauto.so.0"
}
preload = str(os.environ.get("LD_PRELOAD"))
if preload != "None":
user_settings["LD_PRELOAD"] = preload + " " + user_settings["LD_PRELOAD"]

Then save this file as user_settings.py

All done, you are now all set up for gaming on Linux.
