Описание

This video covers installing and running Age of Empires I, II, and III Definitive Editions on Linux using Steam Proton.

Step 1 - GPU Driver Installation

Installing drivers on Linux is usually done using a GUI tool that comes with your distribution, but it is possible to achieve the same effect using Terminal commands.

https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/InstallingDrivers.md

For example, if you using an Ubuntu based distribution with nVidia hardware, run the following Terminal commands in sequence:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update

The guide recommends installing the 450 drivers, however 455 is now available, so instead run the following command:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-455

Obviously, in the future, choose the driver that is current for you and check your GPU is supported.

sudo apt install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386
reboot

Step 2 - Installing Steam and Enabling Proton

Steam can be installed using your package manager, either using a Software Store or through the Terminal.

For example, on Ubuntu this is the following command:

sudo apt install steam

Once installed, launch Steam, update, and then sign into your account.

By default, you will notice that all three of the games are not able to be installed, as they have not officially whitelisted by Valve as Proton compatible, but this can easily be overwritten.

First navigate to Steam / Steam Play / Advanced and tick the Enable Steam Play for all other titles.

Restart Steam, and now you will be able to install the games.

Performance Issues / Bugs

In the second game I get quite a lot of input lag when selecting units or opening menu, but this can be resolved by renaming the ucrtbase.dll in the Wine prefix System 32 folder to ucrtbase.dll.old.

This can be found, at least on my system:

steamapps / compatdata / 813780 / pfx / drive_c / windows / system32

The only other thing I have noticed that is missing is the developer's logos in the first and second game, and a single video that plays during the Art of War tutorials in Age of Empires II, but other than that, the games run very well.
